Ian Taylor and Marc Baker, senior fellows at the Lean Enterprise Academy and authors of Making Hospitals Work.
Marc Baker and Ian Taylor first met in 2000 whilst working for a Johnson & Johnson company in the UK. Prior to joining J&J Marc (who holds a degree in Process Engineering, is a Chartered Engineer and holds an MBA from Cardiff Business School) worked for a well known pharmaceutical company where he first began applying lean concepts and principles in a regulated industry.
Ian (a qualified Production Engineer with considerable experience in Operational Management) started his lean journey whilst managing operations within a highly competitive tier one, automotive supplier supplying Toyota, Ford and General Motors and assisting the organisation’s tier two suppliers in making their own Lean transformations.
While working together at J&J, Marc and Ian developed a robust, standardised and scientific approach to both applying and de-mystifying lean thinking. The company has enjoyed substantial increases in sales per employee, market share and profit margins through its application of Lean Thinking and Six Sigma.
Working at J&J also provided Marc and Ian the opportunity to work with its customers in the healthcare industry, where they began their first experiments in the application of lean to healthcare processes.
Since leaving J&J Ian and Marc have continued working together both with the Lean Enterprise Academy and as independent lean coaches. Specialising mainly in the UK healthcare industry they continue to learn and are further developing their scientific approach to both the application and de-mystification of lean thinking.
